Cities of Africa: From the mythical Timbuktu to the twitter era (ss. XIX-XXI)

This cycle of conferences will be held from March to July 2017 (once a month). The second one will be given by Dr. Daniel Castillo Hidalgo this thursday May 25 at 19:00. He teaches African Economic History (MA Degree) and forms part of the Heritage and Atlantic History Division at the IATEX, University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. His conference deals with the evolution of urban functions in Africa in the long term where he will explore the path-dependence and path-creation processes tied to the colonial and post-colonial affairs. Hence, Castillo will present the existent linkages that appears in African urban-evolution between the first half of the nineteenth century and the early twenty-first century and how traditional features and globalization dynamics interacted there.

Las calles de la guerra civil. Entrevista a Néstor García Lázaro.

El investigador Néstor García Lázaro, de la División de Variación y Cambio Lingüístico, acudió a los estudios de la Cadena Ser Las Palmas el 16 de marzo de 2017. En el programa “Hoy por Hoy Las Palmas” mantuvo una conversación con el periodista David Perdomo sobre los resultados preliminares de un estudio realizado sobre los cambios en el nomenclátor de las calles y plazas de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria durante el período de la Guerra Civil (1936-1939), así como la pervivencia de los mismos y la conveniencia o no de cambiar dichas denominaciones.

First Seminar on Educational Innovation in the Teaching of Spanish and Spanish Literature at Secondary Level. March 18th 2017.

The Educational Innovation Group in Humanities at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, working within the Project for Educational Innovation called Espacios y Contextos (Space and Context) is holding, in collaboration with the IATEXT, the First Seminar on Educational Innovation in the Teaching of Spanish and Spanish Literature at Secondary Level on March 18th 2017.

This seminar aims to create a space for exchange between young and veteran teachers of secondary school in order to foster creativity and energy in aspiring secondary school teachers. Both groups are essential to make the most out of the creativity and energy of young people so it can be appropriately executed and channeled, taking into consideration the experience of veteran teachers in the field of secondary education.

The Institute in Text Analysis and Applications (IATEXT) leads a Network of Excellence financed by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (MINECO)

The Division of Research, Heritage and Atlantic History at the IATEXT has been granted financing by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness for the purpose of revitalizing a “Network of Excellence” within the National Programme for Fostering Excellence in Scientific and Technical Research, also financed by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness.

Dr. Miguel Suárez Bosa, a tenured professor working at the Division of Research, Heritage and Atlantic History, will lead the Network for Excellence as Head Researcher. The Network is called "La Gobernanza de los Puertos Atlánticos, siglos XIV-XXI" (“The Governance of Atlantic Harbors from the 14th to the 21st Century” (HAR2016-81812-REDT)), and it belongs to the category of Thematic Networks, where more than a hundred researchers from both Spanish and foreign universities participate.
