Members of the Atlantic Society and Spaces: Discourses and Cartography Department conduct research in the fields of Regional Geographic Analysis and Human Geography.

More specifically, members’ studies are related to the analysis of socio-demographic structures and processes, that is, to population dynamics and composition from the perspectives of gender, age, socio-economic status, educational and professional specialisation. A further focus are forms of cohabitation, households and housing, in relation to the territorial dimension. Another priority line of work is tourism and residential processes, that is, studying urban spaces and tourism enclaves, to uncover the structures, functions and transformation patterns that evolve there. Further lines of research in the department are the territorial analysis of commerce, transport and transport networks, recognising territorial impact and development-related trends, and, finally, investigation of the natural and cultural heritage and related territorial planning and management interventions.

These lines of work involve quantitative and qualitative research procedures, using data bases and statistical processing, discourse analysis and textual interpretation and geographic information technologies. These working methods position the scientific work of the department’s members at the intersection of Social Sciences and the Humanities and help to strengthen teaching, training and research in line with IATEXT’s general and specific objectives.
